Powerful Springbok No. 8 Jasper Wiese believes South Africa can use the lessons from their 42–38 defeat by Australia to prepare for next year’s Rugby World Cup. The Springboks lost 42-38 in Perth on Sunday after recovering from a 25-point deficit during the second half.

The match also marked Wiese’s 50th Test appearance. SA Rugby reports that Wiese was disappointed by the result but encouraged by the character shown during the late fightback.

South Africa trailed 17-24 at half-time and were 17-42 down after 65 minutes before reducing the deficit to four points.

Wiese entered the match in the 48th minute and said the closing stages demonstrated the determination within the squad.

He suggested that another couple of minutes might have changed the outcome, while acknowledging that such speculation was ultimately irrelevant to the result.

For Wiese, reaching 50 Tests was nevertheless a significant personal milestone. He described representing South Africa once as a major privilege and said reaching the half-century was particularly meaningful within a group that had shared a lengthy journey.

The Australian tour also gave the Springboks practical experience of the conditions and logistics they will encounter when the World Cup is staged in Australia next year. Wiese said the experience of playing there would help the team understand the environment and travel demands before the tournament.

The Springboks' next major assignment comes in November, when they begin the European leg of the Nations Championship.

They are scheduled to play Italy on November 7, France on November 13 and Ireland on November 21, followed by the Nations Championship finals weekend in London from November 27 to 29.
