Jasper Wiese and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu feature prominently in a new analysis of Springbok results, although its findings require caution when assessing individual influence.

Writing for Planet Rugby, James While examined South Africa’s 36 Tests since January 2024, a period in which the Springboks recorded 30 victories.

According to the publication’s figures, South Africa won 19 of the 21 Tests Wiese started and 15 of Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s 16 starts at fly-half.

The analysis compared results and winning margins when eligible players started with those when they did not, making adjustments for the year and opposition.

However, the figures establish an association with team success rather than proving that either player caused it. Selection combinations, injuries, disciplinary incidents and playing time can all affect results.

The method also risks understating the importance of regular starters who are selected for difficult fixtures but rested against weaker opposition.

The findings offer a useful perspective on Rassie Erasmus’s selection options as preparations continue for the 2027 World Cup. They should be read as one measure of performance, rather than a definitive ranking of the Springboks’ most valuable players.
