URC derby weekend promises heavyweight South African clashes

South African rugby takes centre stage in the third round of the United Rugby Championship this weekend, with two major domestic derbies bringing the Bulls and Lions together at Loftus Versfeld and the Stormers and Sharks into confrontation in Cape Town.
All four South African franchises have named strong combinations, with numerous Springboks returning to provincial duty after the international season.
The Citizen reports that the opening two rounds have provided an encouraging start for the local teams, with the Lions arriving in Pretoria unbeaten after winning both their opening fixtures.

For the Bulls, the encounter presents an early opportunity to establish home-ground authority under coach Johan Ackermann, while the Lions will be looking to maintain their momentum against one of the competition's strongest squads.
The Bulls have selected Willie le Roux at fullback, Canan Moodie on the wing and Curwin Bosch at flyhalf, with Hanro Liebenberg captaining the side.
Handré Pollard and Marco van Staden are among the replacements, providing considerable experience off the bench.
The Lions will be led by Francke Horne, with Morné van den Berg at scrumhalf, Chris Smith at flyhalf and Henco van Wyk in midfield.
The Johannesburg side's attacking ambition and ability to exploit broken play could prove decisive against a Bulls team traditionally comfortable with a structured, forward-dominated contest.
In Cape Town, the Stormers and Sharks will renew their rivalry in another fixture featuring several leading Springboks.
The Stormers have named Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu at flyhalf, Cobus Reinach at scrumhalf and Damian Willemse at fullback.
Siya Kolisi starts in the loose forwards, while Ruhan Nel captains the team. The Sharks will field a powerful pack including Ox Nche, Thomas du Toit and Eben Etzebeth, with André Esterhuizen captaining the Durban side from inside centre.
The contest promises a particularly intriguing battle between the Stormers' attacking creativity and the Sharks' physical forward presence.
Elsewhere, the weekend features Glasgow Warriors against Connacht, Dragons against Ospreys, Ulster against Munster and Leinster against Cardiff.
The Irish derby between Ulster and Munster is another significant fixture, while Leinster will look to maintain their standing among the competition's leading contenders.
For the South African franchises, early-season derby victories carry additional importance because of the limited opportunities to gain ground against domestic rivals before the competition's European fixtures begin to exert pressure on travel schedules and squad depth.
The South African derbies are expected to attract particular attention as coaches assess combinations and returning Springboks ahead of the more demanding stages of the competition.
