Messi ends international duty with goal and two assists in farewell win

Lionel Messi described his retirement from international football as the “saddest day of my career” following his final match for Argentina, a 3-0 victory over Benin at the Monumental Stadium.
Messi, who contributed a goal and two assists, addressed the crowd to express his deep gratitude after a 21-year international career.
“It was a huge source of pride for me to defend this jersey for more than 20 years,” Messi said.
“Even in the worst moments we went through and that I had, I never stopped fighting, never stopped being here,” JacarandaFM reported.
“Not coming anymore is going to be deeply painful. I swear I’d like to play for the rest of my life, because playing for the Argentina national team is the most beautiful thing that can happen to you.”
Reflecting on his exit, Messi noted he had no regrets about the timing, citing the intense physical and emotional toll of the recent World Cup campaign where Argentina reached the final before losing to Spain, following a grueling semi-final against England.
“The last World Cup was too much,” Messi admitted, adding that he will now support the team from the stands as a fan.
