The Champions League’s expanded format is delivering an extraordinary scoring rate, with this season’s competition averaging more than four goals a match after Tuesday’s fixtures.

BBC Sport’s Alex Brotherton reports that 187 goals had been scored across 45 matches, an average of 4.16 per game and the highest recorded in the competition’s history at that stage.

The surge follows the introduction of the expanded league phase in the 2024-25 season, bringing more teams and fixtures to Europe’s leading club competition.

Tuesday’s results supplied further evidence of the attacking spectacle.

Liverpool recovered from two goals down to beat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield, maintaining their perfect start. Napoli also won 4-3 against Bodø/Glimt, while Paris Saint-Germain defeated Barcelona 4-2.

Manchester City added a 5-1 victory over AEK Athens, with Phil Foden scoring a hat-trick.

Former Manchester United and England winger Ashley Young told BBC Radio 5 Live that clinical finishing was contributing to the remarkable returns.

The growing fixture list naturally creates more opportunities for goals. However, the average per match indicates that the increase extends beyond simply playing more football.

Whether that scoring pace survives the rest of the campaign remains uncertain. For now, the league phase is producing a succession of high-scoring encounters.
