Elon Musk says SpaceX has arranged $40 billion in debt financing to purchase graphics processing units, highlighting the vast borrowing requirements behind the expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Musk announced the financing on X on Sunday, crediting SpaceX’s investment-grade standing and income from Starlink and rocket launches.

However, Reuters said his announcement left uncertainty over whether the transaction had been completed and its borrowing terms agreed.

Musk indicated that the financing primarily covered processors due in the first two quarters of 2027. He described the debt as callable, allowing early repayment under its terms.

The announcement follows earlier reporting that SpaceX was seeking funding to acquire Nvidia AI chips.

Musk also forecast failures and consolidation among specialist AI cloud providers, arguing that access to debt had tightened for businesses lacking substantial income outside AI data centres.

He said SpaceX would not acquire such operators.

His comments underline the growing importance of established revenue streams in financing the AI industry’s expensive computing expansion.
