Starc turns the tide at Newlands

South Africa’s commanding opening partnership gave way to an Australian fightback as the Proteas were dismissed for 329 on the first day of the deciding Test at Newlands.
Marques Ackerman struck 95 and Aiden Markram made 78, sharing an opening stand of 158 after Australian captain Pat Cummins elected to field.
Nathan Lyon broke the partnership when Ackerman was stumped by Alex Carey, five runs short of a maiden Test century. Australia subsequently recovered ground, with Mitchell Starc finishing with six wickets for 72.
Marco Jansen contributed 52 and David Bedingham 50, while Ryan Rickelton made 42. Australia were yet to begin their reply at stumps.
The series is level at 1-1 following two emphatic results. Australia won the Durban opener by 214 runs before South Africa responded with an innings-and-31-run victory in Gqeberha.
The third Test is scheduled to conclude on 31 October.
