About 99% of voting stations opened across the country on Monday for the first day of special voting, with only a few delayed in parts of Cape Town, the Electoral Commission of South Africa said, SABC News reported.

Voting stations opened at 8am and will stay open until 5pm so that approved special voters can cast their ballots, the commission said. It added that voting was slow to start in parts of Cape Town, where only 10 of the city’s 116 wards were open by 10am.

About 2.6 million eligible voters have registered for the special voting process ahead of the local government elections, SABC News reported. Special voting caters for people who cannot get to their voting stations on election day, including elderly and disabled voters, EWN reported.

Briefing the media in Midrand, Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Masego Shiburi said work was continuing to ensure that all voting stations were fully operational.

Special voting runs on Monday and Tuesday, ahead of the local government elections on Wednesday 4 November, SAnews reported.
