SIU to probe North West road maintenance tender after presidential proclamation

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) has welcomed a proclamation by President Cyril Ramaphosa authorising the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) to investigate the awarding of a special maintenance project on Road P152/1 from Setlagole and Road P34/4 in Delareyville.
The SIU will examine whether the tender's procurement process, contracting and related payments were handled fairly, competitively, transparently, equitably, cost-effectively and lawfully.
The DPWI confirmed it would cooperate fully with the investigation.
The department said director-general Sifiso Mdakane had contacted the North West head of department to convey the national department's readiness to assist where necessary, and had requested that the provincial department facilitate access to all relevant documents and information so the investigation could proceed without delay – records the department noted fall solely within the provincial administration's purview.
The DPWI also acknowledged its earlier involvement in the Section 100 intervention in the North West Department of Public Works and Roads, saying its primary aim there had been to restore normality, improve accountability and ensure systems functioned effectively to deliver essential public infrastructure services.
The department said it remained committed to good governance, transparency, and managing public infrastructure resources in the best interests of communities.
