Light aircraft crashes at Midrand intersection, triggers secondary collision

A light aircraft crashed at the intersection of New Road and the R101 in Glen Austin, Midrand, on Tuesday, triggering a secondary motor vehicle collision and major traffic disruption in the area.

Emergency services were on the scene, with police working to secure the area and manage the resulting congestion, Pearl Magubane reported for the SABC.

Authorities had not, at the time of reporting, confirmed whether anyone was injured or killed in either incident.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Xolani Fihla said Emergency Management Services personnel were actively responding to the reported plane crash.

He said a secondary motor vehicle accident had occurred at the same location following the initial crash, resulting in severe disruption and heavy delays on the roadway.

JMPD officers were en route to assist with traffic control, scene management and diversions, Fihla said, adding that the number of injuries or casualties from either incident had not yet been confirmed and that further verified details would be released in due course.
