Cat Matlala in the dock: R4m payment dominates day four at Madlanga

Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala's testimony before the Madlanga Commission entered its fourth day with his relationship with businessman Hangwani Maumela, and a disputed R4 million payment trail, firmly in focus.

Before proceedings could begin, Matlala's lawyer, Anneline van der Heever, requested an hour's delay to consult with her client on documents they had in hand.

Matlala faced intense questioning on Tuesday over his links to taxi bosses Jotham “King Mswazi” Msibi and Steve Motsumi, amid allegations connecting figures in the taxi industry to the so-called Big Five cartel. But his dealings with Maumela have since opened a further line of questioning.

Advocate Mahlape Sello pressed Matlala on Tuesday over his role in introducing Msibi to Maumela and his involvement in communications surrounding payments between the two. Matlala said Msibi regarded him as a son, and that it was through this relationship that Msibi came to know Maumela.

Sello then challenged Matlala over an alleged R4 million payment. “I do not know what that payment was for,” Matlala said.

His response came under further pressure when he was confronted with evidence suggesting he had sent Msibi proof of payments and directed him to bank accounts where Maumela had allegedly indicated his money should be deposited.

The inquiry continues.
