Checkers rolls out Xpress smart trolley in Gauteng

Shoppers at the new Midstream Estate store in Gauteng can now use Checkers’ Xpress Trolley to scan and pack groceries as they shop, pay on the trolley and leave through a dedicated exit lane.
The first Gauteng store to offer the technology is the new Checkers at Shopping on Eastway in Midstream Estate, Centurion, which opened on 1 October.
Inbound SA reports that shopping on Eastway is the third and largest shopping centre in the estate, and that the store will also offer Checkers Sixty60 deliveries from within the estate.
Developed by the ShopriteX innovation team, the trolley has a touchscreen that keeps a running total of the shopper's basket and allows payment before they reach the exit. The system is designed to cut checkout times by up to 75%.
Shoppers scan a product's barcode as they take it off the shelf and pack it directly into their shopping bags, rather than loading everything into the trolley and scanning it again at a till. The screen can also highlight personalised promotions.
Payment is made on the trolley using the bank card linked to the shopper's Checkers Sixty60 profile, after which the shopper uses a dedicated exit lane instead of unpacking and repacking at a conventional checkout.
Checkers first trialled the trolleys in the Western Cape in August 2025, with 10 made available to customers at Checkers Hyper Brackenfell and another 10 at Checkers Constantia, Business Report reported.
The ShopriteX digital innovation hub designed the technology to bring some of the convenience shoppers have come to expect online into the physical supermarket.
For customers, the main difference is that products are scanned immediately, spending is visible throughout the shop and payment happens before the exit, which effectively removes the final step of unloading a full trolley onto a counter.
