The Nutcracker brings festive magic to Roodepoort Theatre

Johannesburg's Youth Russian Ballet Company (YRBC) will bring Tchaikovsky's celebrated ballet The Nutcracker to Roodepoort Theatre for four performances on 5 and 6 December, offering families a festive-season production featuring some of classical ballet's best-known music and choreography.
The production, presented in partnership with Roodepoort Theatre, follows the Nutcracker Prince's battle with the Mouse King before transporting audiences to the Land of Sweets, Artslink reports.
The programme includes the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” and the “Waltz of the Flowers”, performed by young dancers trained in the Vaganova method, a classical Russian ballet technique recognised for its emphasis on precision, strength and expressive movement.
The production marks a new partnership between the Youth Russian Ballet Company and Roodepoort Theatre, combining the company's developing dance talent with the theatre's production facilities and established audience base.
It also celebrates the contribution of Yana Auger, director of the Russian School of Ballet and a driving force behind the company.
Born in Russia and trained in the Vaganova method, Auger has taught ballet in Johannesburg since 2008 and holds a teaching qualification from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. She has more than 25 years of teaching experience.
Auger was recognised for her contribution to ballet when she was inducted as a Star Recipient on the Stars of Roodepoort Walk of Fame during the theatre's 45th anniversary celebrations on Heritage Day, 24 September 2025.
The December performances will take place in the theatre's recently refurbished Main Theatre, which has been fitted with new seating as part of a broader upgrade.

The refurbishment also included a redesigned entrance, refreshed waiting area and the Walk of Fame honouring artists associated with the venue.
Roodepoort Theatre, which operates under Joburg City Theatres, an entity of the City of Johannesburg, remains an important performing arts venue in the city's western suburbs.
Bookings are available through Webtickets, the Roodepoort Theatre website or the theatre's box office on 011 472 1374 or 0861 670 670.
