‘The Kraal’ gets extra September performances

The South African State Theatre has added three performances of The Kraal after the production attracted sufficient audience interest during its September season.

The play will return to the Sibusiso Khwinana Theatre from 18 to 20 September, following its original run from 3 to 13 September.

Written and directed by Bongani Bennedict Masango and mentored by theatre practitioner Aubrey W. Sekhabi, the production is set in a fictional Zulu royal household in KwaZulu-Natal during the late 1990s.

It follows Banele Dlamini, a young law student whose return home draws him into a succession dispute involving family, power, tradition and inheritance.

Masango's work draws on his own experiences and longstanding engagement with stories surrounding family structures, customs, rituals and ancestral expectations.

The Kraal explores the tension between tradition and contemporary life, particularly through younger characters negotiating their responsibilities to family and heritage.

The production has also received media attention during its current run, including an appearance by Masango on 702 Breakfast.

Tickets for the additional performances cost R150 and are available through Webtickets and Pick n Pay outlets.
