Crowdfunding launched for legal battle over SABC dismissal

Former SAfm presenter Kgomotso "KG" Moeketsi has launched a BackaBuddy crowdfunding campaign seeking around R250,000 to fund a legal challenge against the SABC, following her dismissal from the station. The campaign had raised R4,300 at the time of writing.

Moeketsi, who hosted SAfm's weekend jazz programme Seasons since joining in April 2020, says she was dismissed without due process on 15 July and is seeking accountability rather than reinstatement. She says tensions began after new programme manager Ferdinand Mabalane, appointed in March 2026, allegedly linked her to his earlier departure from Kaya FM, an account she disputes. The dispute escalated after a listener complaint on 30 May, followed by a major technical failure the next day that she felt received less attention. She was subsequently suspended and issued with a charge sheet, and instructed an attorney to challenge the process, arguing it breached her contract's procedures.

The SABC confirmed last week that her contract had been terminated following an internal process, with spokesperson Mmoni Ngubane saying the broadcaster would not comment further, though Moeketsi retained the right to appeal.

Moeketsi, who would have marked 30 years in radio this past June, said she is not seeking her job back but wants an independent assessment of whether her contract was honoured and the process against her was fair. She said the case also speaks to the broader vulnerability of freelancers facing costly disputes with limited resources. She previously worked at Radio BOP, Kaya FM and Gagasi FM.
